This day I call the heavens and the earth as witnesses against you that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may live

Choose early-voting sites based on population distribution

If the Election Commission really wanted to encourage voting, they would expand early voting sites, days and times, not restrict them. They would also choose the sites based on population distribution, not geography. And sites should be near public transportation. The AgriCenter meets none of these qualifications.

But the conservative majority commission does not want to encourage voting. Voters might elect someone they don't approve of.

Treat all voters equally

The City Council followed the law to the letter when it called a special election to allow voters in Super District 9 to elect the person who will fill seat 9-2 until October of 2019.

Why, then, is the same city council Email letters to letters@commercial appeal.com; mail Letters to the Editor, The Commercial Appeal, 495 Union, Memphis, TN 38103; or click on the “Submit Letter” link on the Opinion page atcommercialappeal.com. dragging its feet when asked about the legality of an election that would extend that same right, that of electing representatives to government, to voters in Super District 8 and singlemember districts 1 and 6?

Furthermore, why aren't the council members who currently fill those seats pledging right now to resign on August 3rd if they should win on August 2nd? Their constituents deserve the right to elect their representatives just as much as the voters in Super District 9.

Ordinance 1852 clearly states that a special election can happen in November. It's time for the City Council to catch up.
