Police: Boy shot near Summer Avenue after melee

-

A 12-year-old boy was shot and injured near Summer Avenue on Thursday evening following a melee involving various weapons, including baseball bats, officials said. The boy’s injuries were non-critical, according to the Memphis Police Department.

The police department initially said the victim is 11 years old, but clarified Friday that the boy is 12. Police said the call came in shortly after 6:30 p.m. and that the boy was taken to Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital.

A 34-year-old woman had a head injury and was taken to Baptist East in non-critical condition, according to an incident report.

MPD spokesman Louis Brownlee said officers responded to a fight on North Johnson Circle. An officer said several people were armed with baseball bats and several shots were fired.

The fight stemmed from an argument between two women who each have children from the same father, according to the incident report narrative. One of the women said the other woman came to her residence ready to fight, and brought along a group of people armed with various weapons, and that a verbal argument escalated into a physical confrontation.

The 34-year-old woman — reportedly one of the people who had come to the house — said she was struck in the head with a baseball bat and the 12-year-old boy was shot in the upper right thigh.

No arrests have been made in Thursday’s shooting, Brownlee said.

The 12-year-old is at least the second young person shot in Memphis this week. A teenage boy suffered non-critical injuries Monday evening in a shooting in North Memphis.

Police: Separate shootings leave two dead

Separate shootings in Orange Mound and Hickory Hill left two people dead Thursday, Memphis police said.

The first shooting took place in the 2700 block of Barron Avenue in Orange Mound.

The address is several blocks east of Barron Avenue’s intersection with Lamar Avenue. The exact time of the shooting was unclear, but the police department posted a notice about it on Twitter about 2 p.m.

The victim was taken to Regional One Hospital in critical condition, and the police department later reported that he had died.

Then at 6:30 p.m. officers responded to an address on South Little Brook Circle in the Hickory Forest apartments, police said. A male victim had been shot and was pronounced dead.

The ages of the victims and the circumstances of the shootings weren’t immediately available. The police department asked anyone with information to call 528-2274.
