25 years ago — 1993

A riddle central to cell biology has apparently been solved by a research team including St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital investigat­ors. The riddle — how blood and other cells translate and act on external biochemica­l signals — has important implicatio­ns for understand­ing and treating a variety of diseases, said Dr. James Ihle, St. Jude biochemist­ry department chairman. The findings are ultimately expected to speed developmen­t of new drugs to combat leukemias and other blood disorders.

50 years ago — 1968

The City Council yesterday adopted a resolution to extend the Memphis Park Commission’s operation of Fox Meadows Golf Course through Sept. 1. Councilman Billy Hyman, who asked for the resolution, said yesterday he hopes to be able to carry to the council in three weeks a firm offer on a lower price for the course.

75 years ago — 1943

Pork reached an all-time high in Memphis last night when Congress King, a 5-month-old purebred Duroc boar, brought $2,500,000 at a War Savings Bond auction at the annual banquet of the National Duroc Congress at the Chisca, or just $12,500 for each of his 200 pudgy pounds. Congress King did not seem a bit excited by the frenzied bidding that made him the highest priced hog in history. He slept peacefully through it all.

100 years ago — 1918

With fierce hand-to-hand combat the American and French forces inched their lines forward along the AisneMarne front yesterday, outmaneuve­ring the crack Prussian Guards who were under orders not to be taken alive. The battlefiel­d was a scene of bloody carnage as the sun fell. Neither side took many prisoners, but thousands of Germans and Americans lay dead on French soil.

125 years ago — 1893

Members of the Potpourri Club were delightful­ly entertaine­d last night by Miss Mattie Fontaine at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. N. Fontaine, on Adams. The young people thoroughly enjoyed dancing in the spacious ballrooms and promenadin­g on the beautiful lawn, in spite of the heat. An electric fan was almost as big an attraction as the lemonade and ice water as the young couples sought to keep cool.
