Avery Madilyn Veteto, an incoming senior at Briarcrest Christian School in Eads, has been tapped to sing the StarSpangled Banner on Thursday at Fenway Park during the Red Sox-Yankees game.

Avery, 17, of Germantown, is studying in Boston this summer at Berklee College of Music following an intensive vocal camp at Belmont University in Nashville.

She’s a member of OneVoice, Briarcrest’s award-winning a cappella group.

About a month ago, she submitted her work and a resume to the Red Sox.

“It was kind of a shot in the dark,” she recalled.

Then, about a week ago, she got an email asking if she could sing at the game Aug. 2.

“I was just reading my emails and it said ‘are you available,’ and I was like, ‘Um, I’m available anytime,’ ” she said. “I just kind of freaked out. How is this possible? So many famous people have performed there and to be able to do that as well — and I’m only 17 — is incredible. I can’t wait. It’s going to be such a once in a lifetime opportunity.”

Avery previously sang at AutoZone Park multiple times in Memphis during Redbirds games.

Now, her parents and brother are heading to Boston to hear her sing.

“Completely elated, and not surprised,” Brooke Edgeworth, her mother, said of the news.

“During her time at Berklee, she’s been picked to be lead vocalist for advanced jazz ensemble and lead vocalist for country ensemble. She’s also taking special electives for singer songwriting. Just unbelievably happy for her.”
