TODAY’S BIBLE VERSE

-

Lazy hands make for poverty, but diligent hands bring wealth. Proverbs 10:4

Young accident victim should be compensated

Reading about the likely consequences for the man who hit and severed the leg of the young man Jabari Bailey with his vehicle, I wondered why our laws don’t include sentencing that requires the perpetrator to compensate his victims.

Along with whatever punishment the court imposes on Frank Smith, who was charged with several misdemeanors, he should also have to pay all costs resulting from the accident that Mr. Bailey and his family incur (for the rest of Mr. Bailey’s life). He should also have to compensate Mr. Bailey for any loss that he experiences.

Inland wasted our time, money

Thank you, Mayor Strickland, for finally axing Inland Waste. It’s so ironic that their name screams volumes Email letters to letters@commercial appeal.com; mail Letters to the Editor, The Commercial Appeal, 495 Union, Memphis, TN 38103; or click on the “Submit Letter” link on the Opinion page atcommercialappeal.com. about the quality of their work: spotty garbage pickups with garbage left on the street and berm, random trash pickups whenever they (seemed to) feel like it, the blatant refusal to take an empty box sitting next to the garbage can because it wouldn’t fit inside the can.

I so appreciate their “let-me-goout-of-my-way-to-help-keep-thecity-clean” attitude. NOT.

Surely, surely, there’s a waste management firm that would be delighted to win this contract and do a great job of doing the job they are hired to do. Inland Waste sure wasn’t it.
