25 years ago — 1993

WASHINGTON — The public is skeptical of President Clinton’s budget plan, expressing doubts that it will help the economy or curb budget deficits, according to a Washington Post-ABC News poll. While Clinton has made progress in convincing a majority of Americans that his plan spreads the tax burden fairly, two out of three express agreement with the Republican­s’ contention that the package is too heavy on taxes and does not cut government spending enough.

50 years ago — 1968

The Memphis city school system, in a new venture to keep up with the times, plans an air wing. The planes, however, will not fly. A resolution to accept a helicopter from the federal government was approved yesterday by the city Board of Education. By Jan. 1, two more planes will be obtained for the state’s first public school program in aircraft mechanics, operated through the Area Vocational Technical School.

75 years ago — 1943

Voluntary recognitio­n and continued rigid enforcemen­t of Memphis’ Anti-noise Ordinance again has paid off in dividends. Memphis yesterday was named for the second successive year for one of four Achievemen­t Awards for “outstandin­g achievemen­t in the reduction of needless noise” by the National Noise Achievemen­t Council.

100 years ago — 1918

Congress has made liberal appropriat­ions for what should be the biggest fleet of destroyers in history. The fleet’s constructi­on will involve a new method, steel fabricatio­n.

125 years ago — 1893

The joint Baptist-Methodist camp meetings at Colliervil­le this week have drawn the largest audiences ever assembled in that town. Last night more than 20 persons came forward after the preaching to become Christians. The meetings are held in the hall of Bellevue College.
