Voters can choose school equity

In a recent campaign commercial, Shelby County Mayor-elect Lee Harris is seen standing in front of the new Collierville High School. He states this school will be one of the finest in America. Then Mr. Harris is seen standing in front of an old rundown Memphis school. He states that all Shelby County children deserve an equal education.

What Mr. Harris leaves out is that residents of Collierville were given a chance to vote on a small sales tax increase to support their schools. Memphians had the same chance but voted down a sales tax increase for their schools that would have funded a pre-K program.

Mr. Harris, it would be a good thing if all children in Shelby County had equality in education. However, when Collierville residents vote to tax themselves for the better of their schools and Memphis residents vote not to fund their their schools, how can there be equality?...
