Tigers cautious in camp with their top players

With Memphis wrapping up preseason camp Saturday, the Tigers have survived one challenge. Avoid injury to key players.

Tigers coach Mike Norvell has been cautious in using juniors Tony Pollard, Darrell Henderson and Patrick Taylor this month. The trio were held out of offensive plays in both of the Tigers’ scrimmages except for special teams work.

During preseason camp, all three have worn green non-contact jerseys. Norvell said Thursday he was not worried about them avoiding hits this late given what is known about their ability.

“We’ve seen those guys play a lot of football but what I’ve been most impressed with is how they come to work each and every day,” Norvell said. “All three of those guys I believe are special and I’m glad that they’re bringing the right approach.”

On Friday, he elaborated on the balancing act of keeping his players active but also knowing how much they will be needed during the season.

“We’ve strategically tried to make sure they’re getting the reps that they need to be sharp and efficient,” Norvell said. “On the flip side of it, you have to be able to take care of guys in the sense that they’re going to be put to work."

It’s a philosophy that makes sense given how the Tigers expect to lean heavily on Henderson and Taylor in the run game.

Pollard will face an increased workload this season at receiver along with running back and return duties.

It also makes sense after how last season began for Memphis. During the season opener last year, three players suffered season-ending injuries, including linebacker Jackson Dillon.

That came after wide receiver Sam Craft was lost for the season due to an ACL injury in the preseason. Given how important Henderson, Taylor and Pollard are, limiting their reps has been more beneficial even if they have not taking as many live hits in practice.

“When you look at the two years and the number of snaps that they’ve played throughout that time, you want to make sure that you’re being smart with them,” Norvell said.

It’s a similar attitude Norvell said he’s taken with other veterans, including Dillon and Austin Hall.
