Top Memphis area football games for Week 4
Here are the top games in the Memphis area for Week 4 of the high school football regular season.
GAME OF THE WEEK Whitehaven (3-0) vs. Lausanne (2-0)
When: 7 p.m., Friday (at Rhodes) Whitehaven has averaged 32.3 points per game and thrives with total-offense leaders Vincent Guy at quarterback and Cameron Sneed out of the backfield. Eric Gray is averaging 284.5 rushing yards for Lausanne, but should the vaunted Tiger defense rise to the occasion and find a way to contain the Michigan commitment, quarterback Sky Forest will look to lead the Lynx through the air. It’s a good idea, though, to throw away from Whitehaven’s interception leader, Martavius French.
Covington (3-0) at Brighton (1-2)
When: 7 p.m., Friday Covington made it all the way to the Class 3A title game and looks poised for a return with the dynamic tailback duo of Codarries Page and Marcus Hayes, who are both averaging 13 yards a carry. Brighton outscored Bolton by 51 points for its first Region 1-5A victory last week. The Cardinals will need a similar defensive effort in this one.
Mitchell (2-1) at Central (2-0)
When: 7 p.m., Friday (at Crump) Mitchell’s calling card thus far has been defense, since the Tigers have only surrendered two touchdowns. Mitchell blanked Fayette-Ware in Week 2. Central will look to continue their equal-opportunity scoring ways. The Warriors had three rushing, two passing and one interception return for TDs in last week’s 42-0 win over East. More impressively, the Mustangs were held to minus-35 yards of total offense.
Germantown (3-0) at Collierville (2-1)
When: 7 p.m., Friday Two of the area’s top passers collide. Germantown’s Ethan Payne and Collierville’s Mitch Austin will have continued success if their favorite targets can break free for yards after the catch.
Wide receiver Cameron Baker is a key reason why the Red Devils are ranked No. 8 in the latest Tennessee AP Class 6A poll. The Dragons will be hoping Justin Stonework can duplicate his 11catch, 209-yard effort from a week ago.
St. George’s (1-2) at ECS (3-0)
When: 7 p.m.,Friday, 7 p.m. St. George’s lives and dies with the success of its quarterback Spencer Smith, who accounted for five TDs in last week’s victory over Northpoint. ECS has used multiple quarterbacks up to this point, and all have a viable weapon in senior wide receiver Dawson Williams, who tallied 108 yards against FACS in Week 3.
Melrose (1-2) at East (0-3)
When: 7 p.m., Thursday (at Crump) East has dominated the series of late, with the Mustangs narrowly slipping by the Golden Wildcats by a single point in 2017. Melrose, however, has an all-important Region 8-3A victory under its belt by virtue of a 38-point victory over MLK Prep last week. East, the defending Region 8-4A champion, has been outscored this season, 121-6.
Washington, OK (1-1) vs. Horn Lake (2-0)
When: 11 a.m., Saturday (at Shreveport)
The talent-rich Eagles head to Louisiana for participation in the eighth annual Battle on the Border. It’s one of six games scheduled to be played at Independence Stadium. Horn Lake has warmed up for its matchup with the Hornets by scoring a combined 103 points against Mississippi foes Shannon and Charleston. Washington, out of Tulsa, is led by the state’s top recruit, safety Daxton Hill.
DeSoto Central (2-1) at Lake Cormorant (1-1)
When: 7 p.m., Friday DeSoto Central will be extremely eager to get leading rusher Shemaar Stapleton
Arlington (2-1) at Southwind (2-1)
When: 7 p.m., Friday The host Jaguars can expect plenty of Kenny Walker, who came back down to earth ever so slightly last week in a 48-21 loss to Houston. The senior tailback scored five touchdowns in earlier victories over Raleigh-Egypt and St. George’s. Junior Steve Guy is one of Southwind’s most dangerous weapons on offense and special teams. The Jaguars won last year’s meeting, 49-13.
