A federal advisory panel has recommended full federal approval of a third Memphis gene therapy study. The proposed study would involve six young patients battling rapidly growing brain tumors that returned after conventional treatment, said Dr. Larry Kun, director of the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital brain tumor program. The children would receive an experimental treatment that has shown early promise against adult brain tumors. The experimental treatment involves using the techniques of gene therapy to make a patient’s cancer cells more susceptible to the drug ganciclovir.
50 years ago — 1968
The city yesterday set aside the south end of Mud Island for park and recreation purposes, as well as a 40foot-wide “greenbelt” strip along the Mississippi River extending north to Wolf River. The action came as the City Council approved with only minor amendments the Planning Commission’s zoning recommendations for the island and the western part of Frayser. Proponents fought off efforts by councilman Wyeth Chandler to eliminate the greenbelt.

LITTLE ROCK — Exponents of fresh air and nudeness may find just such a place in the hills of North Arkansas if a proposal by Carl Buick of LaRue is carried out. Mr. Buick yesterday wrote the secretary of state proposing establishment of a nudist camp on a 200-acre farm near Rogers. He said he did not want to break any state law and desired the state’s permission before starting such a venture.

PARIS — General Pershing has brought a number of Apache Indian scouts to France to help him as they did in his Mexican campaign. Unfortunately there have been serious affrays between the Indians and American soldiers on leave in Paris. The Apaches have killed several Americans from ambush in the middle of the city.
125 years ago — 1893
The Appeal-Avalanche stands, has stood and will stand squarely on the Chicago platform, demanding the use of both gold and silver as the standard money of the country, the maintaining of the parity of the two metals and the equal power of every dollar at all times in the market. Whoever says we have ever held a different opinion is a simpleton.
