Remember Sept. 11, fly the flag

This is the 17th anniversar­y of the worst terrorist attack on American soil. As we remember how we felt on that fateful day of Sept. 11, 2001, we should make a concerted effort to mark this day with the American flag. The American flag is the fabric of this great nation. Do you remember how the nation was deluged with American flags after those terrorist attacks? The stores could not keep them in stock for the millions of Americans who wanted them. We wanted to stand shoulder to shoulder against terrorism and show the world that this country was united.

Now those flags have all but disappeare­d. The patriotism that we displayed in the days, weeks and months after the attacks were without peer. I wonder how we, as a nation, can regalvaniz­e the solid stance that once united us and made us proud and strong. It would be great to display the

American flag every day, but if not, every effort should be extended in waving our colors on special holidays and on the anniversar­y of Sept. 11, 2001. Flying an American flag shows our patriotism and appreciati­on for those whose lives were lost then, and for those whose lives were lost while fighting for world peace in the Middle East. I always appreciate the agencies and other organizati­ons that continue to organize events to honor the memory of Sept. 11, 2001. Their efforts help to ensure that we will never forget to keep the events and tears in our minds and hearts and carry on.
