McCain, Luttrell and their public service

Having watched Sen. John McCain’s funeral, I was so appreciative of the clear and constant message of country above self and his true patriotism to work with those with different viewpoints to do what’s best for America’s people. He was a true American hero.

There is no way to compare to McCain’s greatness, but in Memphis we should honor Mayor Mark Luttrell for his many years of service, as he followed his father’s path of service. I would see Mayor Luttrell at many community functions, including benefit dinners, like two of my favorites (Leadership Memphis and Facing History and Ourselves), over the years. He was always a collaborative person.

Mayor Luttrell’s veto of the health care benefits for Shelby County employees who have served only eight years will save taxpayers $6 million to $10 million a year. Each of the Shelby County commissioners who voted for this measure should always be questioned every time they seek a political office.

Thankfully, we have had a Shelby County servant who has told the truth, avoided character issues and has left our county in better shape than the time he began his tenure. May this legacy continue with Mayor Email letters to letters@commercial appeal.com; mail Letters to the Editor, The Commercial Appeal, 495 Union, Memphis, TN 38103; or click on the “Submit Letter” link on the Opinion page atcommercialappeal.com.
