25 years ago — 1993

Hound Dogs and Showboats are out as possible nicknames for a Memphis NFL expansion franchise, and six new ones have emerged: Bandits, Blues, Gamblers, Heartbreak­ers, Phantoms and Rockers. Those in alphabetic­al order are the names prospectiv­e co-owner William B. Dunavant Jr. has submitted to NFL Properties, which oversees the licensing of league products. Nicknames planned by other expansion finalist cities include Stallions in St. Louis, Jaguars in Jacksonvil­le, Fla., and Carolina Panthers in Charlotte, N.C.

50 years ago — 1968

Chief counsel for James Earl Ray, charged with the murder of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., said last night he had given up plans to submit a motion in Criminal Court for improvemen­t of the prison conditions of his client.

75 years ago — 1943

Owners of two automobile­s bearing Shelby County license plates found parked at the Paddock, Highway 61 night spot, will be called before the revocation division of the rationing board to answer a few questions. The OPA office will continue to make frequent checks at the Paddock to ascertain if Memphians are wasting vital gasoline and rubber to patronize the night club located in DeSoto County.

100 years ago — 1918

Last Sunday in Memphis only an occasional automobile was seen on the streets and they were driven by some persons taking ice home. It was the city’s second gas-less Sunday and well observed.

125 years ago — 1893

The city legislativ­e council held its monthly meeting yesterday, and, among other things, approved a monthly budget of $2,500 for the board of health, to include payroll, stock feed, wagon repair, shoeing of horses and quarantine.
