Health profession­als and hospital managers assembled at Baptist Memorial Hospital Tuesday, hoping to glimpse the future of American health care. In a scene repeated at hundreds of hospitals around the nation, a crowd of about 75 watched an American Hospital Associatio­n teleconfer­ence previewing President Clinton’s health care reform plan. Clinton is scheduled to unveil the plan formally in a speech tonight, although a draft has been circulatin­g for more than a week.

Memphis State University will offer a new doctoral program in chemistry this fall under the direction of Dr. Donald Schwartz, former program director of the National Science Foundation.

Memphian S. Toof Brown has been named to the 15man postwar planning committee of the American Legion at the legion’s 25th annual convention in Omaha.

Arthur Chevrolet, noted speedway champ and foreign pilot, will compete in the championsh­ip automobile races at the Tri-State Fair Saturday.

The first issue of the Memphis Sunday Times, under the management of F.Y. Anderson and J.R. Williams, will come out in the morning.
