The Mid-South Fair: 7 things to know and do
The first Mid-South Fair was held in 1856. Civil War, yellow fever, the Great Depression and a 2009 move from the mid-city Memphis to North Mississippi were challenges but not disasters. The Fair endures.
This year's edition started Thursday and continues through Sunday at the Landers Center in Southaven. Here are seven things to know and do.
1. is $10 per "adult," which means persons age 15 to 59. Those younger or older get in for $5, with the exception of kids under 5, who get in free. Check the midsouthfair.com website for details.

perform. Working from a large whimsical set that resembles a pirate ship, these buccaneers perform acrobatic flips, jumps and other stunts from their "plank" diving board.
5. If you missed the at the Delta Fair, don't despair: The hogs will be on the hoof at the Landers Center, too.
6. Want Expect fried dough, "elephant ears," steak-ona-stick, "spiral spuds" and "Megamonster Cotton Candy" and even "Red Velvet Funnel Cake with Cream Cheese," among other challenges to the gastrointestinal system.

Got Yup, and judging from past years, they will run the gamut from harmless if strange "kiddie" rides — for example, "Bear Affair," which invites children to sit inside the stomach of a giant rotating plastic bear dressed in a pair of overalls — to the legitimately intimidating "Firestorm," which is probably best to experience before ingesting the Red Velvet Funnel Cake with Cream Cheese.
