Enough welfare for wealthy

In the past year, the Republican House of Representatives in Washington passed a $2 trillion tax cut for the 1 percent who paid millions for their election.

Last month, Speaker Ryan was pushing another $3 trillion payback for their billionaire backers. They will pay for this extraordinary gift to the Kochs and other 1 percenters by destroying our Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security. I have paid into Social Security since I got my card at age 13. I continue to work and pay taxes at age 75. I consider this to be the worst ripoff of the American people in my lifetime. This travesty must not be passed.

Why double-tax hybrids?

Our elected officials have resorted to double taxation on hybrid vehicles. Hybrid owners pay taxes on fuel when they pull up to the pump just like any other vehicle owners, and should not be taxed more than any other. It is double taxation plain and simple. It’s discrimination to people trying to save the environment and help their pocketbooks. I can understand an electric vehicle which purchases no fuel, but hybrids have gasoline engines and pay highway fuel taxes already.

Mississippi is already at the bottom of the states on income, per capita debt, education, etc., while the state government is in the top five most expensive to run. Our politicians just don’t get it. They undoubtedly don’t understand basic business principles. They just tax more and more but nothing changes. They keep our state in the backwoods.

Wake up, Mississippi, and start voting them out of office.
