Kavanaugh protest held outside Sen. Corker’s office

Close to 60 people protested the confirmation of Brett Kavanaugh as a Supreme Court justice Monday night.

The organizers chose to demonstrate outside the office of Republican Sen. Bob Corker around 7 p.m., holding several signs and megaphones — repeatedly shouting “vote them out,” a chant used during both Kavanaugh’s nomination vote and coming into this year’s mid-term election day on Nov. 6.

Corker announced last year that he would not be running for re-election this year. His name is not on this year’s mid-term election ballot.

Ama Ehrmann, 23, the lead organizer for the event, said she felt “completely numb” when it was announced that Kavanaugh received enough votes to be sworn in.

Ehrmann said they chose to demonstrate outside Corker’s office because of the senator’s vote and what “it represents.”

“As a Tennessee Senator, he is supposed to stand for Tennessee, he is supposed to stand for the women of Tennessee and the survivors of Tennessee, and he is just blatantly ignoring that,” Ehrmann said.

“We are showing him that we are not afraid,” she added.

Diana Chabot, 58, said she was compelled to demonstrate because she is a victim of domestic violence.

“I’m just really tired of the way women are treated in America, I really see it every day,” Chabot said.

“This is about treating all people equal. This is about human rights,” she added.

Chabot said she also came to protest Corker’s vote for Kavanaugh along with “other Republicans across the nation.”

The protest comes after Brett Kavanaugh was confirmed as a Supreme Court justice last week. Kavanaugh’s hearing has since been one of the leading topics driving national conversation on sexual assault as a part of the #MeToo and #TimesUp movements.

Kavanaugh’s ceremonial swearing-in service was held earlier on Monday.
