Trenary’s murder a moral failure

In a recent op-ed, Dr. Kenneth Whalum Jr. connected the murder of Chamber CEO Phil Trenary to “the abandonmen­t of systematic discipline of students in our public schools.” Really? What about the systematic abandonmen­t of discipline of children in their homes?

Where were the parents of these murderers when they were trainable, moldable, teachable? It is safe to assume that some (parents) were pursuing their own self-interests; too busy to make the sacrifices good parenting requires. Don’t blame schools. These young people have made their choices, and now they will face the consequenc­es. They could have chosen another path in life. They are not victims.

I also take exception to the insinuatio­n that poverty and poor schools destine one to criminal behavior. Far

The difference is they have character, morals and values. Secular education is important, but Christian education is far more important.

Readin’, writin’, and ‘rithmetic won’t fix what is truly wrong in our culture. When a man understand­s who God created him to be, he will value his life and the life and property of others. His economic status and education level won’t matter.
