WASHINGTON — The Tennessee Valley Authority is committed to reduce so-called greenhouse gas emissions by 10 million tons by 2000 under proposals announced Tuesday by President Clinton to curb the threat of global warming. TVA board chairman Craven Crowell said the goal of reducing carbon dioxide emissions could be met without a rate increase, partly because TVA intends to complete three more nuclear units by 2000.

WASHINGTON — The Defense Department is re-examining the feasibilit­y of a volunteer peace-time military force. A new study, ordered recently by Alfred B. Fitt, assistant secretary of defense for manpower, will take a fresh look at potential inducement­s which might make military careers so attractive that the draft would no longer be necessary.

City Judge R.G. Kinkle has been named judge of Division One, Shelby County Criminal Court, succeeding Judge James Pleasants, Jr. Albert Carruthers, attorney, will replace Judge Kinkle on the City Court bench.

100 years ago — 1918

Lt. John Philip Sousa’s military band from the Great Lakes Training School gave a concert in Clarksdale, Miss., yesterday for the Liberty Loan Drive.

125 years ago — 1893

Three of the immense turbine water wheels which were built to utilize the stupendous power of Niagara Falls for industrial purposes will be put into place soon. The wheels cost $200,000.
