Oakland adds Germantown, Cordova to schedule

- Cecil Joyce Murfreesboro Daily News Journal USA TODAY NETWORK - TENNESSEE

MURFREESBORO — Two of the top football teams in Class 6A will tangle in the 2019-20 regular season.

Oakland and Germantown will begin a home-and-home series next season, with the Patriots visiting Germantown next year and the Red Devils coming to Oakland in 2020. They are expected to play during Week 4 next season.

It’s not the only West Tennessee

team the Patriots will be adding to their schedule. Oakland also will play a home-and-home series with Cordova beginning next year. Cordova is expected to travel to Oakland in 2019 with Oakland going to West Tennessee in 2020. The two teams are expected to play in Week 6 next season.

Germantown is ranked No. 4 in the state in 6A in the latest Associated Press poll while Oakland is ranked No. 2.

“They’re having a great season,” Oakland coach Kevin Creasy said. “We’ll have a good nonregion opponent early.”

Germantown coach Chris Smith called the game “a great test.”

“It will be a great environment for fans that love high school football,” Smith said. “Sometimes coaches stay away from games like that because they’re concerned about their record.”

Germantown is 9-0 this season with its biggest game of the regular season coming up Friday against Whitehaven at home, a contest that will determine the Region 8-6A champ.

Germantown is 20-1 over the past two seasons, losing only in the second round of the playoffs last season.

Oakland (8-1) has reached at least the 6A state semifinals in each of the past four seasons.

Oakland is coming off a two-year contract with state power and playoff rival Maryville.

Smith said games like that and the series his team is about to begin with Oakland, plus the series Alcoa and Blackman will begin next year, is good for the state.
