Fighting polio and pain

In response to the recent guest column by John Chipley, I can certainly relate. I, too, contracted polio at the age of 4, in 1949. I wore a brace for several years. I was finally able to go without the full leg brace until I reached my mid-50s. During those years, I was able to have an active, physical life, even though my right leg was skinnier and shorter, because of the polio.

Many of us are suffering from chronic pain and require long-term pain medication treatment, as there is no other treatment or cure for Post-Polio Survivors Syndrome. Unfortunately, pain clinics are not sympathetic to our problems and only focus on reducing our medications. I urge the medical community to investigate what pain Email letters to letters@commercial appeal.com; mail Letters to the Editor, The Commercial Appeal, 495 Union, Memphis, TN 38103; or click on the “Submit Letter” link on the Opinion page atcommercialappeal.com. clinics are doing, as well as try to help us with some decent quality of life as we go through PPSS.

We are not going to get better. Like Mr. Chipley, I am in my 70s. There are not many of us left, but I feel like we are a forgotten population. I am also very concerned over this “new” poliolike virus that is affecting children and that this virus may well be related to the polio virus.
