25 years ago — 1993

New York Republican Rudolph Giuliani became the city’s first Republican mayor in a generation early today, defeating incumbent Democrat David Dinkins in one of the tightest mayoral races in New York history. Republican­s also celebrated victory in the New Jersey and Virginia governor’s races, wresting both from Democratic hands as the tumultuous off-year political season drew to a dramatic close.

50 years ago — 1968

A goal of $70,000 has been set by a teenage army which will go from house to house today seeking support for the nonsectari­an St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. About 8,000 high school youths will start their drive at 12:30 p.m. and are scheduled to knock on every door in Memphis to ask for contributi­ons. The money they collect will be used at St. Jude to combat catastroph­ic children’s diseases and for research for cures.

75 years ago — 1943

Memphis is over the top in the biggest charity drive in its history. Success in the War Chest’s campaign for $1,081,271 will be reported officially at a Victory Luncheon today at the Gayoso when more than 300 workers will make their final returns. Indication­s last night were that the huge goal may be exceeded by a considerab­le margin. “There is no question at all about going over the top,” Edmund Orgill, general chairman of the drive, said.

100 years ago — 1918

Sen. K.D. McKellar, junior senator from Tennessee, yesterday expressed belief that the Democrats in this state will come out in force on election day and vote their approval of President Wilson and his ability to bring the war to a successful close.

125 years ago — 1893

WASHINGTON — The House Committee on Territorie­s has authorized a favorable report upon Delegate Rawlins’ bill for the admission of Utah.
