25 years ago — 1993

KAPALUA, Hawaii — Memphian John Daly was suspended from the PGA Tour on Sunday, two days after failing to continue play at the Kapalua Internatio­nal. The announceme­nt was made by PGA commission­er Deane Beman following completion of the tournament on Maui. Beman said he made his decision after speaking with Daly. Daly, who won the 1991 PGA Championsh­ip, was disqualifi­ed from the tournament Friday when he picked up his ball and failed to complete play on the 11th hole of the second round. The suspension affects any PGA-related events for the rest of this year and will continue for an undetermin­ed length next year.

50 years ago — 1968

Leaders of striking city hospital workers, after announcing they would call off the 48-day walkout by workers, said last night workers will not return to their jobs because an afternoon statement by Mayor Henry Loeb “cast shadows” on the city’s intentions to live up to a memorandum of agreement. Jesse Epps, internatio­nal representa­tive of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, said the city, a threeman mediation committee and the union had settled on a memorandum of agreement. He said it was agreed there would be one statement issued jointly by the three groups. Mr. Epps said the mayor stated that employees would be taken back “but only as needed and as they can be absorbed.”

A Woman’s Army Corp unit to be known as the Sergeant York Platoon will be sworn into the Army at Nashville next week. Sgt. Alvin C. York of Jamestown, Tenn., World War I hero, has accepted an invitation to attend and will present the flag of Tennessee to the unit.

100 years ago — 1918

Gipsy Smith, the world’s greatest evangelist and one of its foremost orators, will deliver two addresses in Memphis today in behalf of the First United War Work Campaign which opens Nov. 11. Directors of the local campaign are Leslie M. Stratton, Dr. E.E. George and Capt. G.T. Fitzhugh.

125 years ago — 1893

A concert and ball will be given Tuesday night at the Athletic Club Hall, Lyceum Theater, for the benefit of those left homeless by the recent floods in Louisiana. Prof. Emile Onet and his pupils will perform with a grand orchestral accompanim­ent.
