Where was job growth report?

The Nov. 2 jobs report reflected strong hiring, low unemployme­nt and the best wage increase in nearly a decade. Jobs growth of 250,000 benefited many sectors, including health care, manufactur­ing, leisure and hospitalit­y, and transporta­tion and distributi­on. Perhaps the best news was that 711,000 workers re-entered the workforce in October and four-fifths found jobs. They had left the workforce during the Obama recovery because the jobs created then were low pay and part time.

Today’s stronger current economy is offering better jobs. This is what the fiscal policy of lowering marginal tax rates for corporatio­ns, privately owned businesses and individual­s has achieved. The Wall Street Journal and many other major newspapers carried a job growth story, but The Commercial Appeal chose not to report on it. This was surprising, especially as the

Give Grinch review its due

Kudos to Mark Kennedy of The Associated Press for a most clever and delightful critique of the new Grinch movie. I was into the second paragraph when I realized what he was doing, and after having read Dr. Seuss multiple times to children and grandchild­ren over the years, I fell right back into the cadence of Dr. Seuss’ writing. I thought Mr. Kennedy’s piece was wonderful. And I agree with him — you can’t beat the original.
