- Jamie Munks Memphis Commercial Appeal USA TODAY NETWORK - TENNESSEE

Candidates to replace former state Sen. Mark Norris in District 32 have until noon Dec. 13 to submit their signed petitions to the Shelby County Election Commission. District 32 includes Shelby and Tipton counties. People interested in running for the office must be registered voters who live in the district and obtain a petition from the election commission in the county they live in. The petition must be signed by 25 registered voters in the district and submitted to the election commission office for their county of residence.

Shelby County candidates also must submit a certified copy of the petition to the Tipton County Election Commission by Dec. 13. Tipton County residents must do the same for the Shelby County Election Commission. Gov. Bill Haslam declared a special election last week, more than a year after President Donald Trump nominated Norris as a federal judge in West Tennessee. The U.S. Senate confirmed Norris last month.

The withdrawal deadline is noon Dec. 17.

The primary election will be Jan. 24, and the general election is slated for March 12. Early voting for the primary and general elections opens on Jan. 4 and Feb. 20, respectively.
