25 years ago — 1993

LOS ANGELES — President Clinton said Saturday he was considerin­g whether to push for a national gun licensing system. In an interview, Clinton said he viewed the passage of the Brady bill as only the beginning of a broader effort by his administra­tion to seek sweeping gun control measures. He said he supports a proposal by Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) to ban a wide array of assault weapons, and would also like to consider further proposals to stop people from legally obtaining machine guns by slightly modifying their operation.

50 years ago — 1968

Millington is to be congratula­ted. In these unsettled times, the people have re-elected Tom Hall, who has already served two four-year terms as mayor. They also have returned all five aldermen who were candidates for re-election. But there is anything except stagnation in a town that also has a rival candidate for mayor and 12 candidates for the two open positions among the aldermen. The ballots show the present management is in tune with the people and perhaps the results establish a trend, when considered with re-election of all members of the Shelby County Court who were candidates in November.

75 years ago — 1943

The best prep football teams in Memphis will replay the best prep game of the season tonight, and there’s every indication that a Memphis attendance record will be set. Central High School and Christian Brothers College collide at Crump Stadium in a rematch for the benefit of the blind of Memphis. No doubt the 26,073 capacity of the big concrete and wood stands will be taxed.

100 years ago — 1918

Phil Canale yesterday received a “trench card” from his brother, James M. “Tookie” Canale, 119th infantry, stating that he was safe and well on Nov. 11, the day of the armistice. The young soldier had not been heard from for some time and was known to be serving in front line trenches.

125 years ago — 1893

The winter social season of 1893-94 opened brilliantl­y last night at Hotel Gayoso. A ball was given by the Diletto Club whose members are the season’s 13 debutantes. It was a scene of pink roses, smilax, silver gauze and tropical ferns — an evening of absolute elegance.
