Tigers fans welcomed at UCF
On Saturday, four friends and I went to Orlando for the AAC Championship game between our Memphis Tigers and Central Florida Golden Knights. While we were eagerly seeking a win, it disappointingly eluded us. The Tigers lost, but there was a victory of sorts we did not anticipate.
As we approached the UCF campus in our rental car we were impressed with the beauty and positive image of their campus, and, ultimately, the people who greeted us. The stadium was not visible from the parking garage, so we asked a small group of UCF fans what the best route was to Gate 13. We ended up having a short, pleasant conversation with them, and as we parted, one guy said, “Love you guys!" Wow, that was unexpected. OK, perhaps it was inspired by spirits of the external variety, but nevertheless they were delightful people.

Black and gold were everywhere. UCF fans all around us were cordial, pleasant. They treated us as part of their group. The family in front of us had little kids and the mom was periodically overwhelmed trying to corral them. By the second half we had bonded and I even held her twoyear-old son for her for a few minutes.
As we left the stadium, UCF fans thanked us for coming. They were not only civil, they were gracious. I can’t remember a sporting event quite like it. Who knows? Perhaps, through this kind of positive spirit displayed at a football game, we could find a way to span the political abyss in America. It might just be a great place to start.
