A staff member for the incoming state House minority leader has resigned after allegations of improperly writing checks to himself.

Ken Jobe, a spokesman for the House Democrats, confirmed Wednesday that Derrick Tibbs, a longtime staffer for Rep. Karen Camper, D-Memphis, resigned this week.

Tibbs’ resignation, which was first reported by WSMV, came after questions were raised about checks that had been written to him.

WSMV reported that signatures from the caucus treasurer, a post most recently held by Camper, and one other Democratic lawmaker are required.

The station reported House Democratic Caucus chairman Mike Stewart found his signature on checks to Stubbs. Stewart said he did not sign the checks, which he estimated were worth at least $3,000.

“We are saddened by the misjudgment on behalf of our former employee,” Camper said. “Derrick Tibbs has resigned and agreed to pay all funds back to the caucus.”

Camper, who was recently elected by her Democratic colleagues to serve in their top leadership post, said the caucus is reviewing its policies to any similar actions are prevented in the future.

Tibbs began working at the legislature in September 2009.
