Bears’ WR Miller to be speaker

Event highlights the top high school athletes

Former Christian Brothers and University of Memphis standout athlete Anthony Miller will be the guest speaker at the third annual Commercial Appeal Sports Awards presented by Farm Bureau Health Plans.

The sports awards — called the best night in high school sports — will be held May 17, 2019, at the Orpheum Theatre. The event highlights the top high school athletes in all TSSAA-sanctioned sports along with lacrosse and swimming.

The red carpet begins at 6 p.m. with the awards show starting at 7 p.m.

event,” said Anthony Kimbrough, chief executive officer of Farm Bureau Health Plans. “We’re excited to have Anthony Miller, an outstandin­g player for both Christian Brothers and the University of Memphis now with the Chicago Bears, on board for 2019.

“And we look forward to celebratin­g the talented, hard-working studentath­letes of West Tennessee. These young men and women are the future of our local communitie­s, and Farm Bureau Health Plans is always proud to honor their achievemen­ts.”

Miller was a two-sport standout athlete at Christian Brothers, in football and track and field.

He caught 100 passes for 1,779 yards and finished his career as the school’s all-time leading receiver. He was a Division II state champion in track and field, winning the 110-meter hurdles. He also was a runner-up in the long jump.

At Memphis, he had 238 career receptions for 3,590 yards and 37 touchdowns, all school records.

Miller, who was drafted in the second round of the 2018 NFL draft by the Chicago Bears, currently has 30 catches for 399 yards and six touchdowns in his rookie season.

The night also includes several premier awards, including a lifetime achievemen­t award, courage award, an academic award, a leadership award, male and female overall athlete of the year, play of the year, coach of the year, team of the year, a top team fan vote, a Special Olympics award and an I AM SPORT award.

The I AM SPORT award is given to an athlete who is an inspiratio­nal role model or creates an impact in the community in a positive way off the field.
