San Diego's computer rankings

-

The Toreros finished the regular season and WCC Tournament ranked No. 86 in Kenpom and No. 97 in the NET.

San Diego reached as high as No. 83 in Kenpom earlier this season after a 12point win over San Diego State in December, but also fell as low as 107 after being blown out by St. Mary's at home in February.

Kenpom predicts a five-point victory for the Tigers in the first-round game.

Isaiah Pineiro leads the way

Scholl's team is led by senior forward Isaiah Pineiro, who nearly averages a double-double with 19.1 points and 9.5 rebounds per game.

The 6-foot-7 senior, who has been named to the ALL-WCC first team in back-to-back years, scored a careerhigh 30 points at Gonzaga earlier this season.

Pineiro is one of three San Diego players to average more than 10 points along with guards Olin Carter III (14.8) and Isaiah Wright (13.8).

Yauhen Massalski is San Diego's first option on the interior. The 6-foot-10 sophomore blocked 47 shots this season.

Who is Sam Scholl?

Like Hardaway, Scholl also is coaching at the school where he once played.

Previously an assistant, Scholl was thrust into the role of interim head coach last February after former Toreros coach Lamont Smith’s arrest on suspicion of domestic violence.

Smith eventually resigned, and Scholl was named the official coach of the Toreros just two months later.

The 41-year-old has spent 18 years as an assistant or head coach in the WCC, making him fourth in years of service for active WCC coaches.

Battle on the glass

San Diego's biggest asset this season on the defensive end has been its ability to keep opponents off the glass.

The Toreros are allowing offensive rebounds on just 22 percent of possessions, which is the third-best percentage in the nation.

Memphis, on the other hand, is grabbing offensive rebounds at a 33.9 percent rate, which ranks No. 27 in college basketball. The undersized Tigers have won the rebounding battle in two of their past three games.

Pace of play

San Diego and Memphis play completely opposite styles of basketball, with the Toreros aiming to slow the pace while Hardaway wants to speed it up.

The Tigers finished the season ranked sixth in the nation in Kenpom's adjusted tempo rating and had an average possession length of just over 15 seconds.

San Diego ranks 210th in adjusted tempo and holds the ball for 18 seconds per possession.
