Memphis in May to include Guinness record attempt for longest picnic table
In 2017, a Bourbon beer maker created a picnic table stretching over 1,000 feet at a resort village on the small island of Réunion in the Indian Ocean east of Madagascar.
It celebrated the community tradition of getting together to picnic and became the world's longest picnic table, a record Memphis hopes to break this May at Tom Lee Park. Memphis' effort to construct a 1,060-foot-plus picnic table is part of the Memphis in May International Festival and the city's 200th anniversary. The special Celebrate Memphis event is May 25.
Volunteers have begun cutting lumber and drilling bolt holes ahead of construction of the table at the park the day before the event, weather permitting, said Robert Griffin, Memphis in May director of marketing. Guinness World Records representatives will be available to verify the results.
"Memphians are encouraged to bring their families and friends to take a seat at the table and help Memphis set the record and make it the world’s longest community

picnic," Griffin said in a news release.
The free event will include four stages with performing artists, an airshow over the Mississippi River, a parachute team, a fireworks show coordinated with lighting of the Harahan and Hernando Desoto bridges, painting of a mural on a MATA bus, international food tastings, activities for children and families and a sports zone featuring members of the Grizzlies, Redbirds, Express and 901 FC.
