Early standouts on offense
On offense, Norvell has singled out wide receivers Calvin Austin and Coye Fairman for their growth. He praised Austin for working on being a more well-rounded receiver besides his speed.
Kenneth Gainwell has shown improvement at both tailback and slot receiver as he’s getting more chances at the role his mentor Tony Pollard had.
Early standouts on defense
Defensive back Chris Claybrooks is making a case for most improved defensive player. He’s not only made plays, including an interception earlier this week, he moved up to playing with the first unit opposite TJ Carter on Saturday.
A pair of junior college transfers have also stood out. Cornerback John Broussard has earned praise from both Norvell and defensive backs coach TJ Rushing for his work ethic while defensive line Everitt Cunningham is showing signs of being another great edge rusher for defensive coordinator Adam Fuller to work with
QB Brady White setting a tone
White has looked every bit like a returning starting quarterback with more command and poise under center.
Backups Brady Mcbride and Connor Adair have also made strides showing more understanding of the offense. Mcbride has gotten most of the second team reps so far. Markevion Quinn is still adjusting to his first extended time under center but the sophomore has shown flashes of his athleticism and strong arm.
“I think they’ve all improved since we last stepped on this field in December but we’ve got to continue to grow throughout these next 10 practices,” Norvell said.
Who’s taken snaps at kick returner
Besides standing out in the secondary, Claybrooks is one of several players returning kicks in special team drills. Gainwell, Gabriel Rogers and Cameron Fleming have also handled kick return duties.
New offensive line coming together
It’s still early but the Tigers’ newlook offensive line is starting to take shape. Obinna Eze has settled in at left tackle.while Manuel Orona-lopez and Scottie Dill have been locked in at right guard and right tackle. All three have had their adjustments but Dill said he was encouraged by how fast the group developed chemistry with returners Dustin Woodard and Dylan Parham.
“There’s a lot of new faces on the Oline so there’s a lot of techniques to get better at but we’ve been pretty good so far,” Dill said.
