Man found dead with 100 dog bites after taking shortcut home
LAKE PLACID, Fla. – A man likely was killed by a pack of dogs that bit him more than 100 times as he took a shortcut home, authorities said. Melvin Olds Jr., 45, was found dead before noon Thursday in an animal attack in a wooded area near Lake Placid, according to a Highland County Sheriff’s news release. He was last seen alive a few hours earlier. Authorities captured six dogs in the area whose bite sizes match the wounds on Olds’ body. The dogs’ DNA will be compared with the DNA collected from Olds’ wounds.
JAKARTA, Indonesia – Indonesian authorities issued a tsunami warning after an earthquake struck Sunday night in the Molucca Sea between North Sulawesi and the Maluku archipelago. The U.S. Geological Survey said the magnitude 6.9 quake was centered 115 miles southeast of Manado at a depth of 15 miles. A graphic posted on Twitter by Indonesia’s geophysics agency predicted waves of 1.6 feet for nearby islneds. The quake caused panic in the city of Ternate in the Maluku island chain, as people ran to higher ground.
PESHAWAR, Pakistan – Authorities in Pakistan say they have arrested a man who raised funds for al-qaida militants under the cover of a non-governmental organization. Ilyas Khan of the provincial Counter-terrorism Department said late Saturday Ali Nawaz was using bank accounts linked with Human Concern International. The official said investigators found large transactions in the group’s accounts recently. Counterterrorism forces in Peshawar raided the group’s offices Saturday, arresting Nawaz and three others.
JOHANNESBURG – Several African heads of state gathered in Niger’s capital Sunday to launch a continentwide free trade area that represents an estimated market of $3.4 trillion. The African Continental Free Trade Area aims to create a single unified market for the continent’s 1.3 billion people and boost economic development. The agreement has been signed by 54 of Africa’s 55 countries, with only Eritrea not signing up. Currently, African countries conduct only 16% of their trade with each other, according to the African Union.
