-

WASHINGTON – The Justice Department is shaking up the legal team fighting for the inclusion of a citizenship question on the 2020 census but offered no specifics on why the change was being made. The change announced Sunday comes days after the department vowed to continue to try to find a legal path forward to include the question on the census. The Trump administration has faced numerous roadblocks to adding the question, including a ruling from the Supreme Court that blocked its inclusion, at least temporarily.

WASHINGTON – Elizabeth Warren raised $19.1 million in the second quarter, her campaign said Monday, cementing her status in the top tier of Democratic presidential contenders and surpassing Bernie Sanders, her main liberal rival. The strong showing leaves her behind only Pete Buttigieg, the South Bend, Indiana, mayor who reported nearly $25 million, and former Vice President Joe Biden, who has tallied $21.5 million since his candidacy began in late April. Warren and Sanders have both sworn off high-dollar fundraisers.

CHICAGO – Chicago’s expected jump in gun violence over the long July Fourth weekend left six people dead and another 66 wounded. The police had expected a surge in criminal activity and flooded the streets with an additional 1,500 officers. The totals were far lower than during the last four-day Fourth of July weekend in 2017, which ended with more than 100 people shot including 15 who died. The Chicago Tribune reported that that at least 31 people were shot over an 18-hour period noon on July 4 and dawn the next day.

LUCKNOW, India – A speeding bus smashed through the boundary wall of an expressway bridge and plunged into a drain in northern India early Monday, killing at least 29 people on board, an official said. G. Ravi Kumar told reporters. He didn’t know whether the driver was among the dead.
