MID-SOUTH MEMORIES

-

25 years ago — 1994 North Korea Sunday notified the United States it will resume negotiations on its nuclear program after the July 17 funeral of its president, Kim Il-sung. North Korea’s chief negotiator, Kang Sok Ju, told Assistant Secretary of State Robert Gallucci, head of the U.S. delegation at the nuclear talks in Geneva, that he would fly home for the funeral and then advise the United States when the negotiations would be resumed. However, South Korean officials said today that the North Koreans had informed them that a North-south Korean summit meeting scheduled for July 25-27 had been indefinitely postponed. 50 years ago — 1969 Cape Kennedy, Fla. – Fever is mounting at this port of embarkation, the last stop before the moon, but the just now temperature rise isn’t being brought on by excitement over the momentous trip itself. Rather it is the logistical problems that will be created by an expected influx of almost 1 million visitors, probably the greatest crowd ever to witness an event of such short duration. In 60 seconds next Wednesday, even less if there is much cloud cover, the attraction will be over. The massive Saturn boosting the Apollo 11 astronauts will be out of sight. But the opportunity to be present at one of the historical milestones in man’s life on Earth is enough to lure them to the quick-look launch. The blast-off is scheduled for 8:32 a.m. (Memphis time). 75 years ago — 1944 Washington – President Roosevelt said he will accept “reluctantly but as a good soldier” a fourth term nomination by next week’s Democratic National Convention. 100 years ago — 1919 The County of Shelby owes Memphis 12,000 days of labor, according to Commissioner Albert Mason, and he wants the city to be paid. Mr. Mason says city prisoners are sent to the Shelby County Penal Farm where they are put to work repairing county roads. He is anxious to have the workhouse gang used on some of the city streets, many of which are in bad condition with grass growing up in them. 125 years ago — 1894 There has been a great change in beards lately. Everyone is now wearing the pointed, or Van Dyke shaped, beard which a few years ago was unheard of. The change is due to the Prince of Wales, whose barber contrived it to make the portly prince appear slimmer.
