25 years ago — 1994 Delta Air Lines plans to eliminate 4,500 workers nationwide in the next 12 months, including some groundbased employees at Memphis International Airport, the company announced Monday. Delta has about 95 fulland part-time baggage handlers and ramp and service workers at Memphis International, and company officials estimated 25 or more of those jobs will be eliminated by next summer. Delta operates 18 daily jet flights in Memphis, and company officials said flight schedules will not change. The airline plans to hire service companies to clean aircraft cabins and load baggage on Delta flights here, although exactly which companies have not been determined. 50 years ago — 1969 The Apollo 11 astronauts seem to be thinking of future history books as well as the moon. They have given their space ships names that will be more impressive to future generations, considering the importance of the exploration, than Charlie Brown and Snoopy, the capsules used in the Apollo 10 probe. There is nothing wrong with Charlie Brown and Snoopy; they are fine all-american characters who will be remembered for a long time. Now, Apollo commander Neil Armstrong says he and Edwin “Buzz’ Aldrin will land on the moon in Eagle, while Michael Collins orbits the moon in Columbia. The vehicle names, both representative of the United States, are well chosen. Certainly the flight and landing this month are the payoffs, the crux of more than a decade of research and preliminary flights. 75 years ago — 1944 Russwood Park will certainly overflow with baseball talent and probably with fans tonight for the seventh annual All-star game of the Southern League. The hometown Chicks, by virtue of winning the first half pennant, earned the right of hosts for the second time since this classic was originated and will meet the cream of the crop from the other seven teams of the circuit. 100 years ago — 1919 There is no excuse for the proposed enormous increase in rentals for apartments in Memphis. Apartments that have been renting for $35 have been shot up to $45. The landlords are demanding raises and shoving pistols at the heads of tenants. The matter strikes at the very heart of the prosperity of the city. 125 years ago — 1894 Don’t forget the lawn party this evening given by the Strangers’ Congregational Church at the residence of H.C. Thompson on Kerr Avenue.
