MID-SOUTH MEMORIES

25 years ago — 1994 Los Angeles – Preliminary DNA tests indicate that blood on a glove found on O.J. Simpson’s estate is “consistent with” the blood of the two people he is accused of killing, but is inconclusive for Simpson, a source said Wednesday. Other sources, meanwhile, told the AP on the condition of anonymity that it was unlikely that Simpson’s friend, Al Cowlings, would be prosecuted for helping the former football star flee. Cowlings drove the white Ford Bronco seen by millions of people on national television during a 60-mile chase. Simpson rode in the back, holding a gun to his head at times. If charges of aiding and abetting a fugitive are not filed, a hearing scheduled for Cowlings Friday would not take place and his $250,000 bail would be refunded. 50 years ago — 1969 Nashville – Gov. Buford Ellington plans to consult with all branches of the University of Tennessee in selecting a successor to Dr. Andrew D. Holt, UT president, who has announced he will retire effective Sept. 1, 1970. Since the president of the university will serve not only the main facility at Knoxville but the UT branches across the state, Ellington said, “Each branch of the university — at Martin, Memphis, Chattanooga and Nashville, all of them, should be consulted.” The governor said he is urging the UT board of trustees, who will name Holt’s successor, to move cautiously in its task. 75 years ago — 1944 Registration for the second term of the summer quarter at Memphis State will be held Monday. Courses in regular college subjects are being offered. Present enrollment for the summer session is 308 students, according to R.M. Robinson, registrar. This is an increase of 42 percent over the fall quarter registration, he said. 100 years ago — 1919 First flights by the Memphis Aerial Co. were made from the Driving Park yesterday. The company, which will do a commercial passenger business, received its first plane from Park Field yesterday. Company offices are in the Union Planters Bank Building, where passengers may book for joy rides or short business trips. The plane will also deliver light packages to nearby cities and towns. 125 years ago — 1894 The county court room presented the appearance of a political reception when that body opened its Quarterly Session yesterday. Candidates were there in great clumps and the cards flew thick and fast. When Chairman Barry finally brought the meeting to order, the office seekers had worked the crowd for all it was worth and the only business discussed was the election of a bridge superintendent.
