25 years ago — 1994 Charleston, S.C. – A federal judge ordered an end to 152 years of all-male military education at The Citadel on Friday, instructin­g the college to admit 19-year-old Shannon Faulkner in the fall as a cadet. U.S. Dist. Judge C. Weston Houck ruled that The Citadel’s refusal to admit Faulkner because of her sex violates her rights under the equal protection clause of the 14th Amendment. The school has a year to set in place a plan to accommodat­e other women who may want to attend. 50 years ago — 1969 Malco Theatres, Inc., a Memphis firm that owns 50 motion picture theaters in five states, has been bought by Cinerama, Inc., of New York City for $10 million in cash. The agreement reached yesterday by the two companies provides for the Malco owners to receive the cash offering with options to buy Cinerama common stock. M.A. Lightman Jr., Malco president, said the company, which owns 11 theaters in Memphis and 39 others in Tennessee, Kentucky, Arkansas, Missouri and Mississipp­i, will remain under present management. He also revealed plans to build a four-screen walk-in theater at the Park and Getwell Shopping Center next to the Park-belk Department Store at 3899 Park. 75 years ago — 1944 Our wounded do not wait for Red Cross canteen service when they come to or through Memphis in the Army’s big evacuation ambulance planes. Hardly have their landing wheels stopped turning when the Mobile Canteen rolls up and smiling women board the planes with tea, coffee, milk, sandwiches, cakes, gum and candy. 125 years ago — 1894 R.H. Holmes, W.W. Willis and J.A. Henderson of Vicksburg arrived in Memphis this morning, having made the trip on their bicycles. They are en route on the wheels to Knoxville and will return to Vicksburg via Birmingham.
