Mother: Family will sue cruise company over toddler’s death
INDIANAPOLIS – Speaking publicly for the first time since 18-month-old Chloe Wiegand died, her mother, Kimberley Wiegand, told NBC’S “Today” show that her family will sue Royal Caribbean Cruises for “not having a safer situation on the 11th floor of that cruise ship.” The Indiana girl fell to her death from an open window. Attorney Michael Winkleman has challenged a Puerto Rico police report that says the grandfather dropped the toddler out of a window. Winkleman has said she fell from a window that was inexplicably left open.
WASHINGTON – Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris is introducing a bill responding to water crises across the country. The California senator said the “Water Justice Act” is meant to ensure the country’s water supply is safe, affordable and sustainable. Harris would invest nearly $220 billion in clean and safe drinking water programs. She wants to declare a “drinking water infrastructure emergency” devoting $50 billion to communities and schools where water is contaminated.
HOLYOKE, Mass. – A Massachusetts mayor has announced a Democratic primary challenge to the longest-serving member of the state’s congressional delegation and one of the most powerful members of the House. Holyoke Mayor Alex Morse, 30, on Monday said he is running against U.S. Rep. Richard Neal because Neal has been “absent, unaccountable and unavailable” and “largely silent on the issues that matter most.” The 70-year-old Neal is a 30-year incumbent and chairman of the powerful House Ways and Means Committee.
MUMBAI, India – Firefighters rescued 89 people after a nine-story office building caught fire on Monday in Mumbai, India’s financial capital, an official said. No injuries were reported. Sixteen fire engines battled the blaze and evacuated people from the building using hydraulic platforms in the city’s Bandra area, fire official Rohan More said. The building houses the offices of a staterun telephone company. All of the 89 escaped without injuries, More said. The cause of the fire was not immediately known.
