Beckham’s issues with Giants persist

- Chris Bumbaca USA TODAY

There’s no love lost between Odell Beckham Jr. and New York Giants general manager Dave Gettleman.

In a beef between the Giants and their former star wideout that seems to add another layer each week, Beckham told GQ recently that he “felt disrespected” by the trade that sent him to the Cleveland Browns this offseason.

The comments come less than a week after his new quarterback, Baker Mayfield, told ESPN that Beckham is now playing “in front of fans who actually care.”

Beckham’s grievances here aren’t directed at fans, but he did not hold back in his critique of the franchise as a whole.

“This is me being honest: This team has not been good for the last six years. Period,” he said “... I felt disrespected, because I felt like I was a main reason at keeping that brand alive. They were getting primetime games, still, as a 5-11 team. Why? Because people want to see the show. You want to see me play. That’s just real rap.

“I’m not sitting here like, ‘It’s because of me.’ But let’s just be real. That’s why we’re still getting primetime games. I felt disrespected they weren’t even man enough to even sit me down to my face and tell me what’s going on.

“I wasn’t happy. I wasn’t in a good place. And like I told you earlier, I feel like everything is about happiness, and I just was not.”

Beckham did, however, maintain his affection for Giants ownership, particularly team president and CEO John Mara.

“Everything he’s ever done for me, he’s shown nothing but love,” Beckham said. “Even when we were having our talks, it was coming from a place of love. I could always feel it. So I’ll forever have respect for him.”
