The Agricenter’s sunflowers are in bloom for their annual appearance. Here’s how you can see them

- Harley Chapman Memphis Commercial Appeal | USA TODAY NETWORK – TENNESSEE

The sunflowers at the Agricenter are making their annual appearance and will stick around for nearly three weeks. According to Agricenter Communications Director Christine Donhardt, the flowers were estimated to be open Aug. 9-30, or for about two to three weeks after blooming. About 78,000 seeds were planted across 3 acres near the intersection of South Walnut Bend and Germantown Parkway, which yields flowers that will grow 5 to 6 feet tall. A researcher along with three workers donated their time to create the sunflower fields this year, using a tractor to till the soil and then plant the seeds, according to Donhardt. As the sunflowers naturally wilt and die, the Agricenter plans to cut down the flowers and leave the seeds for birds and other animals to enjoy.

A second field of sunflowers has already been planted, anticipated to bloom during mid-september, Donhardt said.

Taking photos of the flowers

This spot has proved popular in the past for engagement photos, maternity shoots and photos of children.

Optimal times for taking photos include mornings and evenings, when temperatures are lower and the sunlight is not as harsh.

“As with most natural light photography, think golden hour. It especially applies when you want to put the sunflower in its element. What better time than when the Earth’s sun is putting its best face forward? The two ‘suns’ (flower and star) could help you combine for the dreamlike natural landscape photos you’re hoping for,” Commercial Appeal photojournalist Joe Rondone said.

Viewing the sunflowers is free and open to the public, but the Agricenter requests visitors not pick or destroy the flowers so everyone has the opportunity to enjoy them.

You can enter at the intersection of South Walnut Bend and Germantown Parkway, with designated parking available — just follow the signs.
