Cash reward offered after Frayser unrest
A cash reward is being offered for people who were involved in unrest in Frayser following the U.S. Marshals Service officer-involved shooting of Brandon Webber on June 12.
Crimestoppers of Memphis and Shelby County are offering the cash award.
Authorities said dozens of officers were injured following the slaying of Webber that day.
“It is important that we identify those who took the law in their own hands that night,” E. Winslow "Buddy" Chapman, executive director of Crimestoppers of Memphis, said in a media release. “Their actions resulted in several injuries, some severe. We can't allow those actions to go unpunished.”
Chapman said there is no set amount on the cash award but the group wanted to "re-emphasize" that a search was being conducted.
Webber was shot and killed in the driveway of his mother's home at 2075 Durham Ave by U.S. Marshals serving a federal warrant. A few hours later, unrest broke out about two blocks away from the home.
At least 24 officers were injured during the altercation, and six were taken to the hospital, according to a Facebook post by Memphis Mayor Jim Strickland. Two journalists were also injured.
Webber's shooting came one day after the Shelby County District Attorney's Office announced no charges would be filed against the Memphis police officer who shot and killed Terrence Carlton.
Crimestoppers of Memphis describes itself as a nonprofit, tax-exempt, nonpartisan, nonsectarian, citizen-run organization with a mission to help the police capture criminals by offering cash rewards and anonymity to citizens for information about crimes.
