NFL conditionally reinstates Patriots WR Josh Gordon

NEW YORK – The NFL has conditionally reinstated Patriots wide receiver Josh Gordon.

Commissioner Roger Goodell notified Gordon on Friday that on Sunday, Gordon can rejoin the team for meetings and conditioning and individual workouts. After that, according to a league statement, “Subject to appropriate progress on clinical care and other arrangements, he will be permitted to participate in team activities, including practice.”

But Gordon is barred from next Thursday’s game because of a lack of sufficient conditioning and practice time.

Gordon had been suspended indefinitely since December 2018 for violations of the league’s substance abuse policy.

New England has been struck by a series of injuries at the position this preseason. But there are no guarantees Gordon can help the team given his history of suspensions.

NEW YORK – A person familiar with the nature of the injury says New York Jets linebacker Avery Williamson has a torn knee ligament that will sideline him for the season.

Williamson injured the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee in the second quarter of the team’s 22-10 preseason win at Atlanta on Thursday night.

An MRI on Friday revealed the nature and severity of the injury, according to the source who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the team did not make an announcement.

NFL Network first reported that Williamson tore his ACL.

Williamson, one of the key pieces of the Jets’ defense, was still in the game with mostly backups when cornerback Tevaughn Campbell dived for a pass into the end zone and hit into the linebacker’s knee.

Wagner returns to practice for Seahawks after brief absence

RENTON, Wash. – Bobby Wagner was back in pads and on the practice field for the Seattle Seahawks on Friday although it remains unclear when, or if, the All-pro linebacker will see any action during the preseason.

Wagner missed most of the past two weeks following a minor procedure on his knee. He took part in Seattle’s mock game on Aug. 3 then became a spectator. The question is whether Wagner will see the field in one of Seattle’s final three preseason games. It’s unlikely he will play Sunday night when the Seahawks face the Vikings in Minnesota. — Wire services
