‘Maleficent: Mistress of Evil’ claims No. 1 spot over ‘Joker’

The Walt Disney Co.’s “Maleficent: Mistress of Evil” has knocked “Joker” out of the No. 1 spot at the box office, but just barely.

Studios on Sunday estimate that the film starring Angelina Jolie grossed $36 million in North America and $117 million internatio­nally in its first weekend in theaters. The first film had a much stronger domestic showing, opening to nearly $70 million domestical­ly in 2014.

Warner Bros.’ “Joker” landed in second place in its third weekend with $29.2 million. The villain origin story has grossed over $247 million domestical­ly.

Oscar winner Lawrence marries art dealer Maroney in RI

Oscar winner Jennifer Lawrence got married over the weekend in Rhode Island during a ceremony and reception studded with Hollywood stars.

The “Hunger Games” star tied the knot with New York art dealer Cooke Maroney on Saturday at a Newport, Rhode Island, mansion.

Lawrence’s publicist confirmed to The Associated Press that the wedding took place, but did not provide additional details.

People.com reports that Emma Stone, Kris Jenner and Amy Schumer were among the 150 guests at Belcourt Castle.

‘Captain America’ actor Evans helps dedicate youth theater

“Captain America” actor Chris Evans returned to his native Massachuse­tts the weekend to help dedicate the new home of a youth theater company where as a youngster he honed his acting skills.

Evans, wearing a Boston Red Sox hat, helped cut the ribbon Saturday at the Concord Youth Theatre’s new permanent home.

Evans, who grew up in nearby Sudbury, acted in Concord Youth Theatre production­s starting when he was 9 years old.

His mother, Lisa Evans, is the theater’s director.
