Howard is guest speaker for 2020 Sports Awards

Tim Howard, the most-capped goalkeeper in the history of the United States men’s national soccer team, will speak at the fourth annual Commercial Appeal Sports Awards presented by Farm Bureau Health Plans.

The Sports Awards — an Espys-style red-carpet event called the best night in high school sports — are set for May 13 at the Orpheum Theatre. The event highlights the top local prep athletes in all Tssaa-sanctioned sports, along with lacrosse and swimming.

The red carpet begins at 6 p.m. with the awards show starting at 7 p.m.

Howard’s 22-year career included MLS stops in New York and Colorado and more than a decade in the Premier League with Everton and Manchester United.

He was named MLS goalkeeper of the year in 2001. He played in the 2010 and 2014 World Cup and helped the U.S. reach the round of 16 both times. He holds the World Cup record for saves in a match with 15 against Belgium. He is widely considered to be the greatest American goalkeeper of all time.

Howard now lives in Memphis and was recently named sporting director of 901 FC, a pro soccer team that competes at the USL level. The night also includes several premier awards, including a lifetime achievemen­t award, courage award, an academic award, a leadership award, male and female overall athlete of the year, play of the year, coach of the year, team of the year, a top team fan vote, a Special Olympics award and an I AM SPORT award.

The I AM SPORT award is given to an athlete who is an inspiratio­nal role model or creates an impact in the community in a positive way off the field.
