Is Young Dolph quitting the game?

The rapper, Paper Route Empire label head and selfproclaimed “King of Memphis” has been intimating that his retirement from hip-hop may be imminent.

The 34-year-old Dolph (real name Adolph Thornton Jr.), is currently in the midst of a national tour with his fellow Bluff City rapper and protégé Key Glock. Earlier this week, Dolph was on social media, publicly musing about retirement. “Highly considering quitting the music business because I really wanna be with my kids 24/7,” Dolph posted on Instagram.

On Wednesday, Complex published a report on Dolph’s plans, that included a quote from him saying: “I’m done doing music so I can go kick it with my son.”

The rapper has been spending as much time in Memphis as possible of late, even in the midst of his current tour.

On Tuesday, Dolph was in Memphis, between concert dates in Washington, D.C., and Boston, to visit his alma mater Hamilton High School. He toured the school and spoke to students, before presenting officials with a $25,000 donation for Hamilton’s athletic programs.

It’s not clear how serious Dolph is about his proposed retirement, how soon it might take effect, or what impact it might have on his involvement on the growing business of Paper Route Empire — whose roster includes Key Glock, Big Moochie Grape and Kenny Muney, among others.

Complex also reported that one of Dolph’s reps noted “Key Glock is already poised to be the new torch bearer” for the label.

Dolph’s publicist didn’t respond to a request for comment from The Commercial Appeal. Dolph has been grooming the 22-year-old Key Glock — his cousin by marriage — as Paper Route Empire’s new breakout star.

Their collaborative LP, “Dum and Dummer” came out last year, while a new video for the song “1 Hell of a Life” was released Wednesday.

Key Glock’s latest solo effort, “Yellow Tape,” debuted at No. 14 on the Billboard charts last month.

On Friday, Beale Street Music Festival announced Young Dolph would not be appearing at the event, as had been previously announced.

Atlanta rapper Rich the Kid will instead perform in his place on May 2 at Tom Lee Park. Music fest officials said the change was not due to Dolph’s retirement, but rather a scheduling conflict.
