Tyler Perry casting director to visit Memphis

Rhavynn Drummer to hold events for actors

A casting director who has worked with Tyler Perry for more than a decade is coming to Memphis for a pair of events aimed at actors, would-be actors and others interested in the film-and-television industry.

From 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on March 21, Rhavynn Drummer — a writer and director as well as a casting director — will lead a free workshop on "advanced auditionin­g techniques," hosted by the Memphis & Shelby County Film and Television Commission and Princeton James

Production­s. An Atlanta-based University of Virginia graduate, Drummer has worked as a casting director on such Tyler Perry projects as "A Madea Christmas," "Acrimony," with Taraji P. Henson, and, for television, "For Better or Worse," "Sistas" and "The Haves and the Have Nots."

She also has written and directed episodes of such TV programs as "Maid to Order" and "Good Girls."

Intended to help actors make a memorable impression during auditions, the workshop represents a "career-changing opportunit­y," according to the Film Commission.

However, the workshop will be limited to 25 participan­ts, with experience­d actors having priority.

In addition, Drummer will participat­e in a "Conversati­on with Rhavynn Drummer" at 3 p.m. March 22, with a reception preceding the talk at 2 p.m. Hosted by Princeton James, the event will be held at the Artup business-and-art hub at 138 St. Paul Ave. Admission is $30, or $20 for just the "Conversati­on."
