Los Angeles – Lawyers for O.J. Simpson seem to have adopted the “spaghetti on-the-wall” tactic of throwing doubt at every aspect of the prosecutio­n’s case and hoping that some of it sticks to the jury. “The defense does not have to prove it was a Colombian cartel that killed Nicole thinking they were killing Faye Resnick, that Mark Fuhrman planted the glove or that a conspiracy existed. They just have to raise doubt in these areas and let the jury decide,” veteran defense lawyer Barry Levin said. It is a dangerous tactic, though. The defense could lose points with jurors if they perceive the theories as too strange or if the defense fails to back up its theories with any evidence.

New York – Blood, Sweat and Tears pushed aside the Beatles and Johnny Cash to win the Grammy award Wednesday night for recording the best album of 1969. A new group known as Crosby, Stills & Nash won a Grammy, the recording industry’s equivalent of Hollywood’s Oscar, for the best new artist of 1969, Harry Nilsson won the Grammy for the best contempora­ry vocal performanc­e for “Everybody’s Talking” and The 5th Dimension received the award for the best contempora­ry vocal performanc­e by a group, “Aquarius, Let the Sunshine In,” which was nominated for record of the year.

75 years ago — 1945

Hitting on all cylinders, the dependable Red Cross War Fund campaign machine was all set yesterday to shift into high gear as it entered the middle stretch of the three-week drive. It had scooped up nearly $200,000 along the road at last count Friday. Edward F. Barry, general campaign chairman, yesterday urged workers to redouble their efforts and again asked war-minded Memphians to give generously to one of the nation’s most worthy causes.

San Francisco – Herbert Hoover said yesterday he will not permit his name to be used in the California presidenti­al primary as he is not a candidate for the office. 125 years ago — 1895

Not since the United States Weather Bureau was establishe­d in Memphis nearly 25 years ago has such a winter as the present one been experience­d here. The mercury set new record lows between Jan. 23 and Feb. 15. More than 14 inches of snow fell during that period.
