25 Years Ago — 1995
As the international blues community came together Thursday night at the Orpheum to honor the blues tradition at the 16th annual W.C. Handy Blues Awards, it did so with what is fast becoming a new blues tradition — the sight of Buddy Guy hoisting a “flying 16th note” Handy Award over his head. Guy was once again the big winner at the Handys, taking home three awards, including the top honor, entertainer of the year. “I kind of run out of words but I will not run out of accepting awards,” he said as he accepted the contemporary blues album honors for his “Slippin' In,” his second Handy of the night. Guy also won guitarist of the year.
50 Years Ago — 1970
Kent, Ohio – Four students in a crowd pelting National Guardsmen with bricks and rocks were shot to death at Kent State University Monday when the troops opened fire during an antiwar demonstration. Adj. Gen. S.T. Del Corso said troops began firing semi-automatic rifles after a roof-top sniper had shot at them. Four other students were critically wounded, and eight other persons, including two guardsmen, were taken to hospitals.

Authority for Al Chymia Temple to take over and operate the Convalescent School for Crippled Children, Fourth and Keel, as a Shrine institution was granted by the City Board of Education yesterday.
100 Years Ago — 1920
Paris – Americans coming to Paris this season must not be shocked if they see on the boulevards and in the cafes girls with golden faces. It is only the new fashion. Instead of applying cold cream and powder so that their faces look like wax, many of the Parisian beauties are now using gold dust in the making of their complexions.
125 Years Ago — 1895
A Pakistan scientist has been experimenting with the smoke of tobacco and finds it to be one of the most perfect germicides and disinfectants ever used. In proving his claims, smoke from a cigar was blown across a strip of linen containing virulent microbes. The linen then was put into a culture and it was found that the smoke had the effect of delaying the growth of the organisms and that those which managed to live never fully developed.
