25 years ago — 1995

Amsterdam – “Thank you!” Amsterdame­rs cried all along the parade route. “Well done!” they said. As if it had happened yesterday, Dutch people turned out by the thousands to cheer veterans of the liberation of the Netherland­s from Nazi occupation on the 50th anniversar­y of the event. Hundreds of Allied war veterans, mostly from Canada, which was in the forefront of the liberation, paraded through the city in antique military vehicles, buried in fresh-cut flowers, while World War Ii-era military aircraft flew overhead. The veterans then listened to the khaki-clad Dutch Swing College Band play Glenn Miller tunes.

50 years ago — 1970

Small groups of students fought sporadical­ly at Memphis State University yesterday over whether a flag in front of the Administra­tion Building would be lowered to half-staff in memory of four students killed at Kent State University Monday. President C.C. Humphreys, attempting to avert a confrontat­ion between large numbers of students, met with student representa­tives, then announced a memorial service at noon today during which the flag would fly at half-staff.

75 years ago — 1945

Official announceme­nt that the brownout will be lifted on V-E Day brought renewed assurance Saturday night that the horse racing ban and midnight amusement curfew will be suspended at the same time. The only reservatio­n in the brownout announceme­nt was that the prohibitio­n of outdoor lighting may have to be reinstated some time next fall if the coal shortage is serious enough.

100 years ago — 1920

New York – An air flight from Miami to New York with one stop was made today in 15 hours and 35 minutes flying time by the passenger seaplane “Miss Miami,” piloted by Harry Rogers of the American Flying Club. The long journey of nearly 1,500 miles along the coast line was interrupte­d at Morehead City, N.C., where a stop was made for fuel.

125 years ago — 1895

L.P. Furbish, Harry White and C.J. Scherer of the Memphis Cycle Club have been appointed to a committee to complete arrangemen­ts of the big cycle races in Memphis, starting May 17.
